It turns out that Variety’s report about Amy Schumer’s negotiation with Netflix were maybe a little exaggerated–at least according to the standup herself.

The long piece about the pay gap when it comes to women and minorities working in the entertainment industry included a passage about how much Netflix paid Schumer’s for The Leather SpecialAccording to the report, Schumer’s team renegotiated her pay with Netflix after hearing that the streaming service was dropping $20 million on new specials from Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle. Variety reported that Schumer earned $11 million for The Leather Special, a paycheck that was apparently elevated after Schumer’s team pointed to Rock and Chappelle’s earnings.

Except, apparently, that ain’t what happened.

After a bit of backlash, Schumer addressed the controversy (the controversy that, I guess, women deserve equal pay? IDK) in an Instagram post and “thanked” all those that pinged her to tell her what they thought she deserved to be paid. She made her point clear up top: “I believe women deserve equal pay. However I don’t believe I deserve equal pay to Chris and Dave. They are legends and 2 of the greatest comics of all time.”

Schumer didn’t devalue her accomplishments, even if that wording kinda makes it sound like that’s the case. She pointed out that she has been “selling out arenas these last couple years. Something a female comic has never done. That’s a big deal to me.”

There is some truth to the Variety report, though. She added that she “didn’t ask for the same” as her fellow comedians, but she “did ask for more than the initial offer.” So while the the gist of the story is true (Schumer and her team did ask Netflix for more money), she insists she didn’t specifically point to Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle’s paychecks while doing so. “The reports of me ‘demanding’ or ‘insisting’ on equal pay to them aren’t a true,” she concludes.
