So, you’ve just bought a brand new 4K TV. It’s amazing and beautiful to look at, but you’re not sure where to begin. Maybe you check out Michael Gowan’s breakdown of 4K, also known as Ultra HD, plug-ins to enhance your viewing experience. Maybe you consider trying out a new video provider like Vudu or Amazon Prime. Or, if you’re tired of spending money on entertainment, maybe you check out Netflix’s massive selection of 4K/Ultra HD programming.

First, a caveat: in order to take advantage of Netflix’s 4K/Ultra HD library, you have to subscribe to its $12/month Premium streaming plan. This is the same plan that lets you watch simultaneously on 4 screens, and if you don’t already have it (and most people who get Netflix from a family member or long-lost-roommate do) it’s not a huge investment. For only $4/month more than the Basic plan and $2/month more than the Standard plan, the Premium streaming plan, when coupled with your shiny new 4K TV, allows you to watch many of your favorite Netflix shows in seriously high definition.

Because Netflix’s Ultra HD library is so vast, we’ve broken it down for you here. If you watch a lot of Netflix Original shows, films, and comedy specials, the Ultra HD library will become your new best friend. Netflix has converted practically every Original produced in the last three years to 4K, and some of the more recent releases seem specifically geared toward a 4K viewing experience.

However, the true strength of Netflix’s 4K library lies in its diverse science and nature programming. You won’t feel like you’re sitting on the couch watching a documentary about coral reefs. You’ll feel like you’re in a scuba suit surrounded by the sea horses and brightly colored fish that rely on the reef to survive.
