Mayweather Vs. McGregor Fight Plagued By PPV Delays, Streaming Outages

Lately it seems that every time there’s a highly-anticipated PPV event, paying customers are subjected to some sort of delay or outage. Last night’s Mayweather vs. McGregor fight was the latest victim, plagued by PPV delays and streaming outages. Not only did Showtime PPV alert viewers last night of a delay to the main event fight due to a high traffic outage, but UFC Fight Pass customers also had login issues.

According to Deadline, ESPN reported that the Mayweather-McGregor main event fight had been delayed due to pay-per-view issues and outages around 11:30pm (right before its scheduled start time). Showtime, however, was quickly able to rectify the issue and announce that the fight was about to start around 11:45pm.

Customers of UFC Fight Pass, which is a digital streaming service for all UFC events, were experiencing login issues around 9:25pm “due to overwhelming traffic.” You can read the platform’s tweet below, which alerted viewers that the technical difficulty would be “resolved shortly.”

Those who witnessed the fight last night experienced history in the making, as Floyd Mayweather extended his 49-match undefeated streak to a record-breaking 50 after defeating Conor McGregor in the 10th round. Is it acceptable, however, for a pay-per-view event to experience high traffic delays with the prices they charge per customer? We think not. Although UFC Fight Pass had login issues, we’d like to believe that live streaming is still the way to go.
