Just Kidding, Kathy Griffin Isn’t Sorry For That Trump Decapitation Photo

Never mind, everyone. It looks like Kathy Griffin has changed her mind and she’s “no longer sorry” about that photo depicting Griffin holding Donald Trump’s bloody, severed head.

The photo came under public scrutiny when it was released in May of this year. The project was photographed by Tyler Shields, who has largely been absent from most coverage of this current outrage cycle. Almost as soon as the photo was released, Griffin (almost exclusively) was criticized by journalists, celebrities, and fans from both sides of the political aisle. Reportedly, Trump’s young son Barron Trump saw the photo and thought it was real.

Griffin was quick to apologize, tweeting that she was “wrong” and saying “I beg for your forgiveness” in an apology video she released. According to Griffin, the image was supposed to be a commentary about the time Trump said Megyn Kelly had “blood coming out of her whatever.” Despite her quick apology, the controversy cost Griffin deeply. Her tour was essentially cancelled, and she was fired from hosting CNN’s New Year’s Eve special with Anderson Cooper.

“I lost everybody,” Griffin said in her interview with the Australian news station Sunrise. “I didn’t just lose one night on CNN. My entire tour was canceled within 24 hours because every single theater got all these death threats. These Trump fans, they are hardcore … They are a minority, but they know how to act like they’re a majority.”

When asked about the photo during her satellite interview, Griffin retracted her apology. “I’m no longer sorry. The whole outrage was B.S.,” she said. “The whole thing got so blown out of proportion.”

Things got a little heated when host Samantha Armytage pressed Griffin about an apology. “No, you’re full of crap. Stop this,” the comedian said. “Stop acting like my little picture is more important than talking about the actual atrocities that the president of the United States is committing.” She then added. “He said there are some good Nazis, and he’s kicking out young adults who were brought here as kids by their parents, and I’m the one who has to continue to apologize?”

Only time will tell if Kathy Griffin will have to apologize for retracting her apology.
