Netflix is prepping its first Polish-language original series with Oscar-nominated director Agnieszka Holland helming, along with Kasia Adamik. The pair recently collaborated on Holland’s Spoor which is Poland’s submission this year for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar and won the Silver Bear Alfred Bauer Prize in Berlin last February. The Kennedy/Marshall Company and The House Media Company are producing the alternative history Cold War spy thriller for the streaming service.
This is the latest in a raft of local-language productions that Netflix is getting behind — and it’s also a reteam with Holland who previously directed several episodes of House Of Cards.
The untitled eight-episode series will be shot in various cities and regions in Poland for launch in 2018. Set in a world where the Iron Curtain never fell, it’s 2002 — 20 years after a devastating terrorist attack halted the course of Poland’s liberation and the subsequent downfall of the Soviet Union. After two decades of peace and prosperity, the leaders of the regime enact a secret plan that was made with an unlikely adversary in the 1980s and will radically transform Poland, affecting the lives of every citizen in the nation — and the world. When an idealistic law student and a disgraced police investigator stumble upon the conspiracy, what they discover has the potential to ignite a popular revolution while those in power will stop at nothing to keep it a secret.
Created and written by Joshua Long, the series will be exec produced by Frank Marshall and Robert Zotnowski (House Of Cards) for Kennedy/Marshall, along with Andrzej Besztak for House Media, Long, Maciej Musiał and Holland.
