If you’ve finished Season 1 of The Good Place, then you’re no doubt still thinking “what the fork?!” about that big reveal. Considering how spoiler-lite most sitcoms typically are, The Good Place took audiences by surprise by adding real world-building and mystery to its joke-dense recipe. This is one comedy show that begs you to avoid spoilers.

Since it was added to Netflix last month, the Kristen Bell/Ted Danson afterlife comedy has welcomed plenty of new fans to the fold, and you’re all wondering the same thing: what was with that ending? Okay, you’re all wondering two things: what was with that ending and when is The Good Place returning for Season 2? Let’s get into that–and spoilers ahead for the Season 1 finale!

Where did Season 1 leave off?

After 12 episodes packed with revelation after revelation (The Good Place is great at unraveling mysteries), the 13th and final episode of Season 1 unleashed the reveal to end all reveals: the Good Place was actually the Bad Place. To be more specific, the Good Place was a false utopian reality created to torture four individuals: Eleanor (Bell), Chidi (William Jackson Harper), Tahani (Jameela Jamil), and Jason (Manny Jacinto). All four of their personalities were matched for their complete disharmony, and Bad Place architect Michael (Ted Danson) manipulated events to keep this quartet as tense as possible at all times. Eleanor figured it out after she realized how torturous being stuck in “The Good Place” with these three people was, thus ruining Michael’s grand experiment. No problem, though, because Michael rebooted his whole torture scenario, wiping his four victims’ memories and spreading them far apart so they can’t easily team up against him. Eleanor woke up in the afterlife, totally unaware of what had previously transpired, and Michael welcomed her to “The Good Place.” But pre-mindwipe Eleanor had a plan: she stuffed a note in the humanoid guide Janet’s (D’Arcy Carden) mouth. At the end of the finale, Janet approached Clean Slate Eleanor and gave her the note that read, “Eleanor – find Chidi.”
