An accident involving K.J. Apa has affected the behind-the-scenes world of Riverdale. Last week, the actor behind Archie was involved in a late-night car crash after working a 16-hour workday. Apa reportedly fell asleep behind the wheel while making his 45-minute commute. The crash has caused the cast and crew of the CW series to demand better safety precautions.

Thankfully, Apa escaped from the accident with no major injuries. He was taken to the hospital and kept under observation but was released shortly after. However, the accident demolished the passenger side of Apa’s car after hitting a light pole. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Apa’s co-star Cole Sprouse, who stars as Jughead, was supposed to ride back with Apa but changed his mind at the last minute. In the aftermath of the accident, Sprouse has called for CW to provide transportation to the cast and crew members who are working late.

The outrage surrounding the accident has less to do with Apa’s injuries and more to do with what could have happened. It’s currently WBTV’s policy that actors are responsible for their own transportation when a show is filming outside of the United States. Since Riverdale is filmed in Vancouver, Canada, the show falls under this clause. A source said that the studio is willing to pay for a hotel room or taxi ride if an actor feels unsafe to drive, but the accident has still left the cast and crew upset. THR reports that a meeting between representatives for Riverdale‘s actors and Warner Bros. executives is supposed to take place this Friday.

This crash continues a sad trend of unsafe working conditions in Hollywood. Over the summer, stuntman John Bernecker died on the set of The Walking Dead, and professional motorcycle racer S.J Harris suffered a fatal crash while filming Deadpool 2. The filming of American Made also resulted in the deaths of two pilots and the grave injury of a third — tragedies that the families of the victims partially blame Tom Cruise for. Hopefully Apa’s accident will result in better working conditions for the rest of the Riverdale cast and the rest of Hollywood.
