‘First Wives Club’ TV Series Reboot On The Way From ‘Girls Trip’ Screenwriter

Paramount Network (currently Spike) and Paramount Television have tapped Girls Trip co-writer Tracy Oliver to pen First Wives Club, a half-hour TV series based on the 1996 Paramount Pictures movie.

A First Wives Club reboot was originally developed and picked up to pilot by TV Land last year with a different writer. While the network passed on the pilot, the project was kept alive and moved to Paramount Network for redevelopment. Paramount Network, slated to debut Jan. 18 as Viacom’s leading scripted cable brand, also took in newly picked up TV Land series Heathers and American Woman, which will be part of the network’s inaugural slate. This marks Par Network’s first collaboration with sibling production company Par Television.

The First Wives Club series, like the film, which starred Diane Keaton, Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn, will be based in New York City. It will follow a group of women who band together after their marriages fall apart, and who find strength in their sisterhood- and of course a little revenge.

Karen Rosenfelt (the Twilight saga, The Devil Wears Prada), who also exec produced the TV Land pilot, is executive producing.

Oliver recently co-wrote with Black-ish creator Kenya Barris the screenplay for the hit feature comedy Girls Trip, giving Oliver the distinction of becoming the first African-American woman to write a movie that grossed over $100 million domestically. She also co-wrote with Barris Barbershop III and is currently adapting the best-selling novel, “The Sun is Also a Star,” for MGM and Warner Brothers, which she is also executive producing. Oliver’s TV series credits include Dan Fogelman’s ABC comedy The Neighbors and the Starz drama series Survivor’s Remorse. She is also known for writing, producing and acting in the popular webseries, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. Oliver is repped by ICM Partners, Brian Dobbins at Principato-Young Entertainment and attorney Kimberly Stenton.
