Have you ever known someone who absolutely hated you? Who hated who you were and how you acted so much they weren’t afraid to tell you how much they genuinely disliked you to your face? Jim Carrey has, and he recently dished about it on Norm Macdonald Live to our collective delight.
This isn’t the first time Carrey has spoken about Tommy Lee Jones‘ intense hatred for him. The story first came out when Carrey was promoting Dumb and Dumber To on the Howard Stern Show back in 2016. However, the actor and comedian revisited the story again during an interview with Norm Macdonald. Luckily for us, there’s video footage and lots of impressions in this retelling of the feud.
According to Carrey, Jones’ intense hatred of him came to a head while they were filming Batman Forever together. One night, Carrey discovered that they were dining at the same restaurant, so he dropped by Jones’ table to say hello. “I went over and I said ‘Hey Tommy, how are you doing?’ like that, and the blood just drained from his face. Like he had been thinking about me 24 hours a day,” he said.
The iconic actor then began shaking, and Carrey impersonated Jones growling. “He must have been in mid kill-me fantasy or something like that,” he joked.
“He went to hug me, and he said ‘I hate you. I really don’t like you,'” Carrey said.

Most people would have left after that, but Jim Carrey has never been most people. The comedian claims that after the declaration of hatred, he pulled up a chair, and that’s when Jones delivered what should be an iconic burn: “I cannot sanction your buffoonery.”
The Jones story starts around the 1:08:30 mark in the YouTube video. I highly recommend taking a minute today to watch. With respect to Mr. Jones, the world needs a little more buffoonery right now.
