Afternoon Delight: Hip Brooklyn Gets The Hero It Deserves in ‘aka Wyatt Cenac’

What better way to prepare for the fast-approaching weekend than by indulging in the some of the Internet’s most well-done web content? Take advantage of your lunch break and treat yourself to Afternoon Delight, Decider’s carefully curated picks of the best short-form content available on the world wide web. This week we’re spotlighting aka Wyatt Cenac, a seriously witty new web series that marks Cenac‘s directorial debut.

Written, directed by, and starring Cenac, the series sees The Daily Show vet don a vigilante superhero persona called the Viceroy by night to fight crime in gentrified Brooklyn. By day, he’s the Cenac we all know and love; grumpy, cynical, and full of perfectly-timed commentary. His superhero isn’t your ordinary comic book figure – he’s a Brooklyn brand of crime-fighter (with a costume the colors to match). He faces all kinds of the borough’s villainous characters – entitled Brooklyn parents, car burglars, artisanal mustard shops, a Prospect Park strangler (who Cenac finds common ground with over not understanding the appeal of a store that only sells mustard), and a slew of other uproariously nefarious figures.

The first episode sees Cenac in a situation some Brooklynites dread – being sat next to a yuppie couple with a large, disruptive stroller. Cenac attempts to get them out of this sacred space, but it only backfires and causes more terrible parents to infiltrate the bar. The deadpan humor and totally relevant subject matter combines to make this one of the funniest web series in recent memory – hell, we’d watch a full-blown aka Wyatt Cenac TV show. Between Cenac and his quirky companions (the diverse, gut-bustingly funny ensemble really drives the comedy home), every episode provides laughter in an understated, unexpected manner that will leave you wondering how something this subtly funny ever crossed through someone’s mind at all. The topical sense of humor is necessary nowadays, and who better to deliver it than someone as quick-witted and tuned-in than Cenac? This love letter and critique of the borough Brooklyn has become is a breath of fresh air.

aka Wyatt Cenac is distributed by Topic, a First Look Media brand that houses a ton of brilliant content. There are six episodes of aka Wyatt Cenac available to stream on the site, adding up for about an hour total. It’s an hour that flies by, and one that makes us sad there aren’t more episodes to stream right now – Cenac’s offbeat brand of humor is a total gift.

Be sure to follow Cenac on Twitter and watch the rest of the episodes on Topic.
