Disney’s Movies Anywhere Launches in Partnership with 4 Other Major Studios

Cord-cutters are constantly being asked to hop onto the newest thing in streaming. Subscribe to this, upgrade to that, add this on. But the brand new “Movies Anywhere” service might be one worth looking into. It’s essentially a digital video locker that will provide one central place to store your digital movie purchases across multiple platforms, and now it’s launching in partnership with Warner Bros., Sony, Universal, and 20th Century Fox.

How it works is you sign up for a free Movies Anywhere account and sync it to your iTunes, Amazon Video, Google Play, and/or Vudu accounts. All of the movies you’ve purchased digitally through those platforms will be available to you in your Movies Anywhere library. (This doesn’t include rentals, of course, so if you’re a VOD renter instead of a buyer, Movies Anywhere will have less appeal.

Movies Anywhere is available to be purchased at the App Store, Google Play, and Amazon, and it’ll work on Apple TV, Kindle Fire, Roku, Chromecast, and more.

Their current deal is if you sign up for the service — which is free, by the way, which is pretty nice — and connect to two video services, and you’ll get 5 free movie downloads. Though before you get too psyched, know that they’re not 5 free movies of your choice. So here’s hoping you like Big Hero 6, the Ghostbusters remake, Jason BourneThe LEGO Movie, and Ice Age.

Major studios currently not included under the Movies Anywhere umbrella include Paramount and Lionsgate, though according to The Verge, conversations are ongoing.
