Decider After Dark

‘Fifty Shades Darker: Unrated’: Just How Unrated Is It?

Attention, Fifty Shades fans: your evening just got a whole lot sexier. This past weekend, HBO released Fifty Shades Darker: Unrated onto its streaming services, giving fans of the already-R-rated sequel film an extra 13 minutes of smangin’.

If you’re interested in knowing exactly what you’re getting in those extra-erotic minutes, we’ve got you covered. Of course, 13 minutes isn’t a ton of time for additional scenes or plot lines, but it is enough time to give viewers a brand new sex scene, plus extended versions of two steamy moments from the theatrical version. And when we say steamy, we mean fogging-up-any-mirrors-nearby steamy.

The first extended sex scene comes around an hour into the film. Anastasia (Dakota Johnson) is exploring the Red Room, the room in Christian’s (Jamie Dornan) fancy apartment devoted to pain and pleasure. Naturally, as Christian explains the various toys, they both get turned on and want to bang. In the R-rated version, Christian goes down on Anastasia, and then he has sex with her from behind for a very brief amount of time before the film cuts to a panorama of the Seattle skyline. But in the unrated version, we get this beautiful shot.

Fifty Shades Darker: Unrated gives viewers a close-up view of Christian and Anastasia getting it on, and we are here for it. Jamie Dornan’s lower abdomen? Check. Those manly arm veins? Check. Some hot consensual sex? In this case, yes. The unrated scene may only be 11 seconds longer than the theatrical scene, but hoo boy, do those 11 seconds make a difference.

Less than 20 minutes after Anastasia and Christian get down, we’re treated to another sex scene, this time involving a pool table. Yes, we’re talking about the scene that was too NSFW to have made it into the original theatrical cut.

Immediately after the notorious elevator fingering scene, the unrated version of Fifty Shades Darker follows Anastasia and Christian as they continue their elevator sexcapades post-dinner (remember, that elevator was taking them to an expensive rooftop restaurant). They make out in the elevator of Christian’s building, but right as they get inside his foyer, Christian’s phone rings and he’s swept away to do business. To pass the time, Anastasia explores the billiards room, and when Christian finds her, they make a bet: if she wins, she takes him to the Red Room. If he wins, he gets to choose what their evening has in store for Anastasia. Christian is victorious by the skin of his teeth, and he decides to just bend Anastasia over on the table right then. No foreplay, no warm-up, just straight penetration.

If we’re being honest, this sex scene is kind of anti-climactic (but actually). They spend four minutes playing pool as their sexual tension lingers in the air, and when they finally bone, we only see around twenty seconds of fully-clothed pumping. But regardless, a new sex scene is a new sex scene, and this one will please anyone who’s ever fantasized about having sex on a pool table. Plus, this additional scene includes some serious house porn if you’re into beautifully decorated apartments.

The final major sexy addition comes at the end of the film, right after (spoiler alert!) Anastasia says yes to Christian’s proposal. In both versions, we see the duo taking a shower together–fully clothed, may we add–and after some hot n’ heavy moments, Anastasia asks to be taken to the Red Room. Once inside the room, viewers of the R-rated movie see Christian pour hot oil on a blindfolded and cuffed Anastasia, much to her pleasure, and a tangle of limbs as they have sex. However, Fifty Shades Darker: Unrated provides viewers with much more than a vague sense of body parts.

Don’t even pretend like you aren’t curious about the creative positions Christian and Anastasia come up with.

Besides these three moments, the remaining “unrated” footage isn’t actually all that explicit: it’s primarily additional plot surrounding (spoiler alert again!) Christian’s plane crash and a cameo from Anastasia’s mom Carla (Jennifer Ehle). But even though the majority of the unrated footage is actually fairly tame, the sexy stuff more than outweighs the chaste, making Fifty Shades Darker: Unrated well worth the watch.

After all, you’re watching Fifty Shades for the hot stuff–don’t bother lying to yourself about it–so why not get some extra kicks with the unrated edition?
