Yesterday, Watchers on the Wall reported that actor Marc Rissmann has been cast in the role of Harry Strickland, the leader of the Golden Company mercenary group, for Season 8 of Game of Thrones.

The casting news comes as a shock to fans who have been hoping for a reunion between Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and Daario Naharis (Michiel Huisman), her former lover. We first met Daario in Season 3 when he killed the leaders of the Second Sons mercenary group and took control for himself. Dany and Daario got hot in heavy after he pledged his allegiance to her, but at the end of Season 6, Daario and the Second Sons stayed behind in Meereen to keep the peace.

Because of Daario’s mercenary background, fans began to speculate that he might return in Season 8 under the guise of leading the Golden Company in an alliance with Cersei Lannister, all the while really working with Daenerys to take down Lannister forces from the inside. While we appreciate a good ‘ship, this theory was never really all that logical. The Golden Company and the Second Sons have traditionally been in competition, so it seems pretty out of the question that their leaders would unite.

Putting fans’ romantic feelings aside, Rissmann seems like a solid casting choice for the role of Strickland. He’s German, has experience working on epic dramas, and has that whole handsome-yet-rugged thing going for him, as seen in his Instagram below.

Yup, looks to me like the Game of Thrones team made the right call.
