‘GameFace’ On Hulu: Because We Can Always Use Another Hilarious Hot Mess

Do you ever wish Broad City were just a bit more British? Then you better fire up season 1 of GameFace on Hulu ASAP. The 6-episode comedy series, created by and starring Roisin Conaty, follows the life of Marcella, an aspiring actress and the total definition of hot mess, and watching her misadventures is simply a whole lot of fun.

From falling asleep (with red wine lips!) dressed as a princess during a children’s party to drunkenly liking an ex’s old Instagram photo, Marcella does the things we’ve all done (or almost done) and yet still manages to make it worse for herself. It’s enjoyable to watch a character comedically live out a worst case scenario at each and every turn, and in between laughs, it might also be helpful to jot down a quick list of what not to do based on her experiences alone.

If you liked British comedy series Fleabag, which hit Amazon Prime last year, you’ll enjoy many of the same themes in GameFace. As Marcella navigates an old ex (Dustin Demri-Burns), a frustrated driving instructor (Damien Molony), and the all-too-honest mirror that is therapy, she can’t seem to get out of her own way, but also isn’t bothering herself with making grand improvements anytime soon. We know, and she knows, she’ll probably mess up again. And sometimes, we’re kind of hoping she does.

GameFace is a healthy dose of comfort TV watching for fans of fans of British comedies and the popular “ladies figuring out their lives” genre of TV shows that we will always be in need of. Conaty hasn’t invented a new genre of TV shows here, but she’s solidified her place amongst the best of the best creating relatable, silly, flawed female fare. Plus, she’s inserting simple, charming jokes such as Marcella’s gentleman friend who’s never seen Friends and just can’t stop giggling at the concept of Smelly Cat, which is a delightful and innocent balance to all the awkward facepalm moments that make up the rest of her life.

The Brits know how to make a proper binge-watch, keeping each season to only a handful of episodes so that you can breeze through the series and still want more. As we watch to see if Marcella ever lands an acting gig or if she finally learns how to drive, the show delivers enough silly scenarios to also earn the more heartfelt, honest moments that will make you want to give her a hug. She’s like that friend from college that you can only meet up with every 6 months or so to catch up with over wine, but when you do, it’s just so damn fun. Make plans to meet up with Marcella & co. now, as it’s sure to be a good time.
