This morning Warner Bros. dropped a first look at the sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and rather than receiving the thrilled fan response they were probably expecting, much of the attention went to the fact that there was still one very big problem with the film – Johnny Depp was still starring as Grindelwald. The decision to cast the actor, who has faced allegations of domestic abuse from ex-wife Amber Heard, has been widely criticized, but the team behind the film hasn’t budged.

Given the recent onslaught of sexual abuse allegations in Hollywood and prompt firing and recasting of Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer in All the Money in the World just six weeks ahead of the film’s release date, it’s an extremely bad look for the Fantastic Beasts team not to have taken action. Fans on Twitter are not holding back when it came to expressing their disappointment and anger with Depp’s casting, and they have some ideas about who should play Grindelwald instead.

Some are already making suggestions for who should really play Grindelwald (and what a shame it was that we got tricked into thinking we had Colin Farrell):

While others are not shying away from the uglier side of Depp’s alleged abuse:

The film, titled Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, is scheduled for release November 16, 2018, which seems like plenty of time to recast him. Whether or not this fan reaction and the current climate in Hollywood will affect the film’s future remains to be seen.
