While filming a scene in Ghana over the weekend for the upcoming BBC/Netflix series The Forgiving Earth, UK camera operator Mark Milsome was killed when a stunt scene involving a car went awry.
Details on the incident are scarce, but according to Screen Daily in the UK, it was a night shoot on the set in Ghana during the filming of a car stunt sequence when Milsome, who was working as a camera operator, was killed.
The Forgiving Earth, which was formerly titled Black Earth Rising, is a co-production between Netflix and BBC2. According to the Netflix site, the series is an “intricate thriller” that addresses the personal, legal, and political turmoil ignited by the prosecution of international war crimes.”
Milsome’s career spanned 30 years, highlighted by his work on the Oscar-winning Saving Private Ryan and the Emmy-winning Game of Thrones. He was nominated for an award from the British Society for Cinematographers for his work on Downton Abbey. His dozens of credits include everything from humble dramas like The Theory of Everything and Call the Midwife to more visually ambitious fare like the James Bond film Quantum of Solace.
The BBC’s statement to Screen Daily reads, “We are deeply shocked and saddened to hear this terrible news. Mark Milsome was hugely talented and a much respected colleague. Our thoughts are with Mark’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
