Check Out This Collection Of Ava DuVernay-Approved Films On Netflix

If you’re in the mood to go down a Netflix rabbit hole and watch some films that come with a glowing recommendation, Ava DuVernay is here for you. Over the weekend, the groundbreaking director tweeted about several indie movies on Netflix that have been directed by people of color and women. The films are all part of Array Now, an independent film distribution and resource collective that was founded by DuVernay.

Created in 2010, Array Now is described as the “rebirth of the African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement (AFFRM).” It’s a collective that supports diverse voices in film and seeks to push select films to a global audience. DuVernay has always been an impressive figure in Hollywood, but in recent years she has become better known in mainstream circles as an industry-changing advocate. This is especially true of her relationship with Netflix. Her powerful documentary, 13th, was nominated for an Oscar and remains one of the most powerful watches in the streaming service’s arsenal of documentaries. Basically, if the director of Selma and Middle of Nowhere is tweeting about something, you know it’s going to be good.
