It used to be that HBO dominated the stand-up special game, and then Netflix came along. The streaming service has practically taken over, releasing dozens and dozens (seriously, and dozens) of specials over the past few years. Big names now turn to the streaming giant when it comes to dropping a feature-length chunk of comedy, and the move has now paid off with total domination of the Best Comedy Album at the Grammys.
Every single entry in the 2018 Best Comedy Album category comes from a Netflix stand-up special. While Netflix specials have been nominated in the past (Patton Oswalt’s Talking for Clapping won at the last ceremony), they’ve never dominated the category like this.
And this even goes beyond dominating, somehow, because six Netflix specials were nominated in the five categories! Yeah, two Dave Chappelle specials are splitting one entry. Now that’s impressive.
Here are the five (or, I guess, six) Grammy Award nominees for Best Comedy Album:
- Dave Chappelle, The Age Of Spin & Deep In The Heart Of Texas
- Jim Gaffigan, Cinco
- Jerry Seinfeld, Jerry Before Seinfeld
- Sarah Silverman, A Speck of Dust
- Kevin Hart, What Now?
