Godless, Netflix‘s seven-episode Western helmed by Scott Frank and Steven Soderbergh, is a unique little series. Starring Jeff Daniels, Merritt Wever, Michelle Dockery, Jack O’Connell, and an incredible ensemble cast of familiar faces and breakout stars, the series is set in 1880s La Belle, New Mexico, a town where women run things and a man on the lam finds protection (ever so briefly) in their midst. It’s no surprise that something from Frank and Soderbergh is so compelling, and if you’re wanting more after the show’s seven-episode stint, you’re not alone. Here’s everything we know about the future of Godless.

How did Godless Season 1 end?

The big battle in the Godless finale, “Homecoming”, left a lot of characters dead and even more characters’ futures unclear. Unlike its predecessors, there’s much more of a rapid pace and sense of urgency in this seventh episode, and it’s better for it. While some characters get away and others meet a grisly fate, there’s certainly enough left up in the air to allow us to see more of the happenings of La Belle and the gunslinging ladies that run it.

Will there be a Godless Season 2?

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like there will be. Frank originally wrote Godless as a film, but Soderbergh told him it would probably work better as a miniseries – and he was right. While the series failed to deliver on a lot of its “No Man’s Land” premise, the handful of open-ended storylines and vague character fates leave things open for a potential future to expand upon where the show lacked. Godless was intended to be a limited series, however, and at this point, it seems like there are no plans to expand on our women-driven Western – but as the apparent miniseries Big Little Lies has shown us, never say never.
