Miss ‘Narcos’? Let ‘La Viuda Negra’ Scratch That Itch

The problem with streaming TV shows that we love is that we devour them in a weekend and then have to wait an entire year to get new episodes. The Narcos fans at Decider have been fidgeting at their desks ever since September 1st, when that show’s third season dropped.

But now we’ve got something to tide us over in the meantime, as the second series of La Viuda Negra. This U.S.-Colombia co-production is an adaptation of the book La patrona de Pablo Escobar and tells the story of Griselda Blanco. In real life, Griselda Blanco was a drug lord for Pablo Escobar’s Medellin cartel. She was known as, variously, “The Black Widow,” “The Cocaine Godmother,” and “The Queen of Narco Trafficking.”

Series 1 of La Viuda Negra (literally “The Black Widow” in Spanish) told the story of Blanco’s escape from her abusive childhood home situation and introduction into and rise within the criminal world. Season 2 sees Blanco mixed up with the American DEA and choosing between being the Queen of Cocaine and her family’s future.

Series star Ana Serradilla is a Mexican actress best known for starring in the telenovela version of Desperate Housewives. She plays Blanco as the center of a whirlwind of betrayal and danger. At 40 minutes, the episodes fly, but with 66 episodes in the second season, it’s a true telenovela that will keep you plenty occupied until Narcos returns.
