Everything You Wanted To Know About ‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 7’s Fiery Dragon Battle

If you’ve been wondering how Game of Thrones pulls off grand scale battles with truly epic special effects on the small screen, then this new behind-the-scenes featurette will be of special interest to you.

As revealed by People, the clip from the upcoming Season 7 Blu-ray/DVD release focuses on the much talked about episode “The Spoils of War.” That episode featured plenty of dragon action (like, a lot of dragon action, y’all) and the clip above reveals the hard work that went into bringing it to life.

Featured in the clip are actor Emilia Clarke (a.k.a. Daenerys Targaryen) and the episode’s director, Matt Shakman. Clarke gave insight into how the dragons have evolved over the years.

“As each season comes along the dragons and the CGI gets more impressive,” said Clarke. There’s a practical component too, as the clip shows how Clarke has to climb into a mechanical rig that doubles for the dragons. Every season has seen more and more shots of Daenerys riding a dragon, with the most recent season using over 80 shots.

Shakman spoke to the storytelling side of the action sequence and why he chose to focus on one character in particular.

“I chose to focus on Jamie… that [episode] was about being on the other side of a dragon attack,” explained Shakman. “That you have Daenerys Targaryen unleashed for the first time in Westeros, and it’s about Jamie Lannister trying to hold together his troops in the middle of watching the world change forever.”

The Game of Thrones Season 7 Blu-ray/DVD set arrives on December 12.
