Why Isn’t Iron Fist In Netflix’s Splashy New “Marvel Collection” Pop Up?

Let’s get this out of the way — a lot of folks didn’t care for Marvel’s Iron Fist. I didn’t mind it so much. I mean, I think it’s by far the weakest Netflix/Marvel show, but there’s something endearing about its utter unintentional camp. But a lot of people don’t like Marvel’s Iron Fist. The hatred is so pronounced that people thought Marvel’s The Defenders was in on the joke that Iron Fist was bad. Defenders EP Marco Ramirez has denied this, but evidence emerged this past week that maybe, just maybe, Netflix isn’t so keen on Danny Rand (Finn Jones).

Netflix has started to roll out new interactive splash pages on some of their operating systems. You can’t necessarily see these on desktop, but next time you’re scrolling through Netflix on your Roku or Apple TV, you might see a big, thematic carousel pop up. There’s one for supernatural shows that takes you through Netflix’s vast library of creepy, crawly stuff, and there’s one for Netflix’s Marvel collection. You’ll see Hell’s Kitchen pop up and then an image of the Punisher (Jon Bernthal) with a click through link to the show. You can scroll through additional titles, represented by their respective stars until you return to the Punisher. If you hover on one title, footage from that show starts. It’s a really fun way to link the characters together. The only problem is that as of this past weekend, Netflix had forgotten to invite Iron Fist to the party.

I’ll admit I’m rather obsessed with this. I’ve clicked through it multiple times, waiting in vain for Finn Jones’s face to pop up. So far, he hasn’t appeared. It’s only The Punisher, followed by Elodie Yung as Elektra, then Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and…The Punisher again. It is an endless loop of dazzling Marvel heroes, closing in on itself, never including Iron Fist. It’s an ouroboros of shade. Was it a mistake? Was it intentional? Did one rogue coder in Silicon Valley decide to have a laugh? (In my head this rogue coder is British, obviously.) Or does Netflix hate Iron Fist?

Netflix does not hate Marvel’s Iron Fist. We know this because they’ve already ordered another season and it’s in production now. Yet, Iron Fist has been conspicuously omitted from Netflix’s fancy “Marvel Collection.” Is it a conspiracy or not? And yes, I have reached out to Netflix for comment, and no, they have not responded. All I have are my theories. This is my moon landing.
