Movie star / giant slab of well-toned meat Tom Hardy thrilled the attendees of a Comic Con in Sao Paolo, Brazil, over the weekend when he appeared on a video to spill some details about the upcoming Venom movie he’s in. Hardy plays the title character, Venom, a.k.a. Eddie Brock, a longstanding villain in the Spider-Man rogue’s gallery. We last saw Venom on the screen being played by Topher Grace in the poorly-received Spider-Man 3.
Hardy’s Venom, is set to be directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland; Gangster Squad) and will co-star Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, and Riz Ahmed. At the Sony panel in Brazil, Hardy revealed that the plot for Venom will be based on the comic book Venom: Lethal Protector.
Lethal Protector was a 1993 series that saw Venom as a more anti-hero character, having come to a truce with Spider-Man and attempting to to give up his life of crime in San Francisco. But some other villains have other plans, which may or may not include the villain Carnage as the film’s true antagonist.
Venom is set to open in October 2018, and it’s currently unsure how it may or may not factor into the Sony/Marvel deal that allowed Spider-Man to appear in the Avengers movies.
