Hopefully you are already familiar with the viral “The Christmas Tree” clip on YouTube that has been circulating every holiday season for over a decade now. The popular video, which was published in 2006 and has racked up nearly 5 million views, stars John Roberts as an excitable mother who finds and decorates the family Christmas tree during the holidays.
If the voice sounds familiar to you, that’s because it is. Roberts has also been the voice behind Linda, the Belcher family’s passionate matriarch, for the past 8 seasons of FOX’s Bob’s Burgers.
In the clip, Roberts (as “the Christmas tree lady”) cracks the whip on her family to go out and find their Christmas tree, clean up after the pine needles, and to constantly relish in its inherent beauty. His magnificent whiny voice is reflective of a classic New Jersey or Staten Island-esque Italian American mother. If you had the chance to watch this past weekend’s two-part episode of Bob’s Burgers titled “Bleakening,” you may have noticed the uncanny resemblance between the two characters (especially given the Christmas theme).
In the animated original comedy series, Roberts uses the same voice personality for the character Linda, a role he likely nabbed after the Christmas tree clip, as well as a 2007 clip he did with his cronies titled “Jackie & Debra” that also went viral.
In “Bleakening,” which is currently available to stream via Hulu, Linda attempts to throw the Christmas party of her dreams in the family’s burger restaurant where their tree is stolen with all its ornaments, forcing the Belcher clan to set out on a mission to track it down. In typical fashion, their journey ends with everyone coming together in the most Christmas way possible. You can watch a brief excerpt from the episode below.
