Sea Oak, The Climb and Love You More — Amazon’s three comedy pilots from this season — will not be moving forward to series, Variety has confirmed.
The move reflects the new programming strategy mandated by Jeff Bezos, away from niche series and toward tentpole projects like the new iteration of Lord of the Rings, as well as the shift in leadership at Amazon Studios. The executives who greenlit the projects, which bowed on November 10, have all exited — from content head Roy Price to comedy and drama chief Joe Lewis. COO Albert Chang has been serving as interim head while the search continues for a replacement for Price.
The Climb, an auteur effort from creator and star Diarra Kilpatrick, revolved around a woman in Detroit who seeks “an extraordinary life through Internet fame.”
Love You More was toplined by Bridget Everett, a vivacious woman who works as a counselor at an independent living residence for young people with Down syndrome.
And the black comedy Sea Oak starred Close as a Rust Belt woman who comes back from the dead after she’s killed in a home invasion. Atlanta’s Hiro Murai directed the pilot and exec produces with creator George Saunders, Jonathan Krauss and Evan Dunsky.
“We’re excited about, and committed to, telling diverse and risky stories from the best storytellers in the world,” said Lewis at the time. “We can’t wait for customers to see these incredible new universes from Diarra, Bridget, Michael and George.”
