People Are Divided About NBC’s Potential ‘The Office’ Revival

It looks like there’s a chance we’re all heading back to Scranton, Pennsylvania. TV Line has reported that NBC is considering reviving The Office to premiere during the 2018 – 2019 season. This new version of the classic sitcom will still follow Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch and will feature an assortment of new and old characters.

The Office premiered in 2005 and enjoyed a nine season run, ending in 2013. Based on the British show of the same name, the series followed a seemingly normal paper company run by Michael Scott (Steve Carell), and the series almost immediately became a national hit. However, fans hoping that Carell will return to the land of paper may be a bit disappointed. At the moment, Carell will not be involved in the revival. The show will instead be searching for a new regional manger / boss for the office.

“We often talk about The Office,” an NBC exec told Deadline in August. “I’ve talked to Greg [Daniels] four times over the past few years. It’s always, ‘Maybe someday, but not now’. There is certainly an open invitation, but we don’t have anything happening right now. If he wants to do it, I would do it.”  After the success of NBC’s Will & Grace revival, it seems as if the network is now a bit more interested in reviving its older properties.

Fans have been having fun imagining what The Office may look like in the age of Slack, social media, and Millennial outrage:

However, some fans are less than excited about the idea of a revival:

Steve Carell left The Office at the end of Season 7, and the sitcom continued without its iconic boss for two more seasons. These seasons gave the show’s background characters more time to shine. In the cases of Ellie Kemper, Zach Woods, and Mindy Kaling, their increased screen time likely helped further their careers and have influenced the comedy landscape at large. Kemper currently stars on on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Woods has been on Silicon Valley for years, and Kaling is known for the sweet and ambitious The Mindy Project. However, the Michael Scott-free seasons of The Office are still considered to be the worst era of the show. It’s unclear how NBC will be able to re-ignite fan passion for the show without the man behind Michael Scarn.

But this is all speculation. At the moment NBC has only admitted that its considering an Office revival. Only time — and a cast list — will tell if this is something we need to get excited about.
