‘Sneaky Pete’ And ‘The Grand Tour’ Were The Most Watched Amazon Prime Originals Of 2017

Streaming has always been a bit of a mystery. Because of the prevalence and overwhelming success of streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video, we know that streaming isn’t going anywhere, but without a measurement system like the Nielsen ratings, mainstream viewers and TV critics never really know just how popular streaming shows are. However as we make our way into 2018, Prime Video has made the successes of its past year just a little easier to track.

Amazon has released data about its most watched shows and movies of the year, and some of the results may be a bit surprising. We now know that The Grand Tour was globally the most watched Prime Video original series of 2017 and the Giovanni Ribisi-starring Sneaky Pete was the second most watch original. That order was flipped for U.S. subscribers. Sneaky Pete was the most watched original stateside, and The Grand Tour was the second most watched show. Those two originals were then followed by Seasons 1 and 2 of The Man in the High Castle (in that order) and surprisingly The Tick, Amazon’s quirky superhero comedy. According to the data, Sneaky Pete was an especially big hit in cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, but D.C. had a different Prime Video original as its favorite — The Man in the High Castle.

There are other interesting insights in the report as well. For example, anyone who spent the last weekend of the year binge-watching TV and eating leftovers should be unsurprised to learn that December 30 was Prime Video’s biggest day for streaming. On that day, The Grand Tour Season 2 and Amy Sherman Palladino‘s Golden-Globe nominated The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel were the top streamed shows for Prime Video, and the biggest movies were Kumail Nanjiani‘s The Big Sick and The Circle, which stars Emma Watson and Tom Hanks. Conversely, the least popular day for streaming Prime Video content was April 3, which likely has to do with March Madness.

The report covers several other metrics as well. According to Amazon, usage of Prime Video’s X-Ray feature, which allows subscribers to look up actor information and fun facts while they watch, increased by 85 percent in 2017. The feature was used the most for Daddy’s Home, the first season of Sneaky Pete, and The Tick. Also, Prime Video’s addition to Apple TV seems like it was a long-awaited success. The app had the most first week downloads of any app in Apple TV history. Other interesting facts about Amazon’s year in streaming are below.
