‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Returns With A *Must-See* Episode This Sunday

Star Trek: Discovery is finally back and it’s returning with a bang. This Sunday’s all-new episode, “Despite Yourself,” is really, really good. While we’re loathe to serve up any spoilers, the episode had us — okay, me — gasping, laughing, screaming, and jumping out of my seat. Along with plenty of shocking plot twists, the episode also manages to pay homage to Star Trek’s legacy in surprising ways. For one, it was directed by Star Trek: The Next Generation star and Star Trek: First Contact director Jonathan Frakes.

Star Trek: Discovery is set about a decade before Star Trek: The Original Series, and follows the daring crew of the USS Discovery during a time of war against the Klingons. Sonequa Martin-Green plays Michael Burnham, a brilliant Starfleet science officer who finds herself in a position of disgrace after her brash actions to save her former crew ironically doom them, and spark an intergalactic war. Jason Isaacs plays Captain Gabriel Lorca, a sort of old school war dog who is willing to resort to any means necessary to beat his opponent. That means enlisting Burnham to his aid and pushing his own ship’s chief engineer Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) to the brink, as the key navigator in an experimental “spore drive.” When we last left Star Trek: Discovery, Stamets almost killed himself in a daring set of tactical jumps, and the USS Discovery was “lost” in space. “Despite Yourself” picks up the story where we left off.
