‘Young Sheldon’ Is The First CBS Renewal Of 2018

You know what they say — if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. CBS has announced today it has renewed its Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro-created comedy Young Sheldon for the 2018-2019 season. The statement comes during TCA’s winter 2018 tour and marks the first renewal the network has announced this year.

Set in 1989, Young Sheldon follows the boyhood life of The Big Bang Theory‘s standout character, Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons). Played by Iain Armitage, the series picks up with a nine-year-old Sheldon who has recently skipped four grades to start high school. Sheldon has to navigate this new social world, balance his old life, deal with his sassy but strict Texan mother (Zoe Perry) and twin sister (Montana Jordan), and of course run intellectual laps around everyone around him. It’s a fish out of water story told through one of CBS’ most memorable characters.

Young Sheldon has made a huge impact on our schedule in the short time it’s been on the air,” Kelly Kahl, President, CBS Entertainment, said in a statement. “While the show’s DNA is clearly rooted in The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon has staked out its own place in the TV universe with a unique creative tone, brilliant writing and a gifted multi-generational cast. We can’t wait to see Chuck, Steve, Jim, and Todd [Spiewak]’s vision for how the Cooper family deals with Sheldon growing a year older … and smarter.”

It’s no secret that The Big Band Theory has been a huge hit for CBS. The series consistently pulls some of the strongest numbers of any comedy, and according to CBS, Young Sheldon may have the potential to follow in the original’s footsteps. The network revealed the show was the No. 1 new comedy of the 2017 season, seeing 16.17 million viewers as a whole. At the moment, there’s only one comedy that currently leads Young Sheldon as the most-watched comedy on television — The Big Bang Theory. Maybe we’ll get Little Leonard next year.
