Seth Meyers Brutally Roasts Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey In 2018 Golden Globes Monologue

Seth Meyers opened the 2018 Golden Globes with a monologue that pierced at the heart of the recent sexual harassment controversies that rocked Hollywood — but did he go too far? Some of Meyers’ most pointed jabs at disgraced mogul Harvey Weinstein and House of Cards star Kevin Spacey were met with gasps and groans.

Meyers kicked off his monologue acknowledging that his position, as the first comedian selected to host a major awards ceremony after the #MeToo movement, was “like the first dog they shot up in space.” And after a few mild jokes about the energy in the room — like “Good evening ladies and remaining gentlemen” — he turned his satirical gaze towards Hollywood’s worst offenders.

“Well, I think it’s time to address the elephant not in the room. Harvey Weinstein isn’t here tonight because, well, I’ve heard rumors that he’s crazy and difficult to work with,” said Meyers. “But don’t worry, because he’ll be back in 20 years when he’ll be the first person booed during the In Memoriam.”

When the room gasped and booed at that joke, Meyers deadpanned, “It will sound like that.” Which brought the room back. Then, he took on Spacey:

“I was happy to hear they’re going to do another season of House of Cards. Is Christopher Plummer available for that, too? I hope he can do a Southern accent because Kevin Spacey sure couldn’t.”

That joke was also met with an awkward mix of laughs and groans, to which Meyers zinged, “Oh, is that too mean? To Kevin Spacey?”

Later in his monologue, Meyers used a format from his late night show called “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell,” which let Jessica Chastain, Billy Eichner, Issa Rae, Hong Chau, and Amy Poehler deliver punchlines. When Eichner made another joke at Spacey’s expense, noting that queer coming-of-age film Call Me By Your Name would have lost Spacey at the phrase, “Of age,” Meyers quipped that it was odd that his joke seemed to go too far.
