Rachel Brosnahan’s Big Win For ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Brings Amazon Back Into The Golden Globes Game

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan took home the 2018 Golden Globe for Best Actress in a TV Comedy. It was a big win for the actress, who has been plugging away in supporting roles in shows like House of Cards for years, but it might be an even bigger coup for Amazon Studios. Brosnahan’s win proves that the beleaguered streaming service still has some awards cache — even if 2017 was a down year for them.

If there’s one place where the Golden Globes are consistently ahead of the curve of their awards show brethren, it’s in recognizing the accomplishments of up-and-coming actresses in the TV sphere. Rachel Brosnahan has been on critics’ radars for a while, but The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel recast the dramatic actress as a 1950s stand-up comedian. Brosnahan accepted her award from comedy legends Carol Burnett and Jennifer Aniston, and used her moment to implore others to make way for more stories about unique women. “Let’s hold each other accountable,” she said. But it wasn’t all seriousness. Brosnahan let herself get starstruck for a moment when she noticed who was in the front row. She said, “Hi, Oprah. Wow!”

During Brosnahan’s speech, the camera cut to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel‘s creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and Amazon head Jeff Bezos. Bezos has been leading the charge to revamp Amazon Studios since the streaming service encountered a disappointing night at the 2017 Emmys. Bezos has been on the march for a new “Game of Thrones for the service, but Maisel’s success suggests that things aren’t completely dire for Amazon. In the past, Transparent and Mozart in the Jungle have been (unlikely) darlings at the Globes. Brosnahan’s win means Amazon’s still has the favor of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. If anything, Netflix is the streaming service that may need to catch up with its peers in the awards race.
