Jerry Seinfeld to Direct, Star In Pop-Tart Movie 'Unfrosted' at Netflix
Netflix has gotten a bit perkier thanks to the recent acquisition of Jerry Seinfeld‘s beloved web series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. The series follows Seinfeld interviewing a different iconic comedian every episode as they ride around in fancy cars and guzzle lattes. However, there’s been a bit of confusion about the show since it moved from Crackle to Netflix, specifically revolving around controversial comedian Louis C.K..
When the series premiered on Netflix on January 5, it was easy to tell that some editing of the original series had been done on Netflix’s part. For starters, the series no longer includes references to Crackle, and instead of being laid out chronologically by season, episodes now appear inside of one of four Netflix-curated collections. When Sean L. McCarthy wrote about those collections for Decider early this week, Netflix was streaming 58 episodes of the show, two shy of the original’s 60 episode run. One of the missing episodes, as noted in at least one Reddit thread, was the show’s Louis C.K. episode. Some online theorized that the removal happened because of the recent sexual misconduct allegations surrounding the comedian.
However, Decider can report that Louis C.K.’s episode — unfortunately titled “Comedy, Sex and the Blue Numbers” — now appears under the Late Night Espresso collection for the show, which it did not when Netflix first added the series. How do we know? Sean L. McCarthy’s review of the collection referenced the excellent episode featuring George Wallace, which was originally listed as Episode 12 of Collection 4. Since the publication of that story, George Wallace’s episode is now currently listed Episode 13 of Collection 4; it moved back one episode after C.K.’s episode was added as Episode 11 of Collection 4.
So, that raises a few questions:
- Why was the Louis C.K. episode of Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee originally omitted from Netflix’s collection of the series?
- How did it come to be added, and did anyone specifically ask for it to be?
- Are there any other missing episodes?
Decider has reached out to Netflix looking for clarification on the first two questions, and will update the story when we hear back.
Regarding that last question, there is one other episode from Comedians/Cars/Coffee‘s original run that doesn’t appear in the collection. That episode is “The Over-Cheer,” which stars Jason Alexander as George Costanza. It’s arguably one of the most fun episodes of the series as it shows two Seinfeld alumni paling around together in character. The episode originally appeared in Season 3 of the series, but according to Netflix, the streaming service doesn’t have the rights to Alexander’s episode. This was because “The Over-Cheer” was a special Super Bowl episode, and therefore wasn’t included in Netflix’s acquisition of the series.
Netflix also confirmed that all other episodes of the series are now streaming, and new episodes will launch on Netflix later in 2018.
