What’s ‘Dolby Vision Cert Tests’ And Why Is Seemingly Everyone Watching It On Netflix?

As someone who obsessively covers people’s streaming habits for a living, I like to think that I have a fairly good idea about what people like to watch. If a superhero show premieres, there’s a pretty good chance Twitter is going to be happy for a while. If Netflix drops a new season of Black Mirror or Rick and Morty magically appears, you can bet that Reddit will have something to say about it. Though everyone acts like they don’t watch sitcoms targeted at large audiences, the prevalence of show like Fuller House, The Ranch, and The Middle prove that’s probably a lie. However, this latest Netflix discovery has baffled me.

According to Instantwatcher, a site that chronicles what Netflix, Amazon Video, and Prime Video subscribers have added to their queues, one of the hottest streams of the season is something called Dolby Vision Cert Tests. Take that Golden Age of television!

Jokes aside, the title’s description says it’s a “Test title to evaluate a Dolby Vision display’s representation of unique metadata.” So really, it’s just a sound and display test. The odd thing about it is that over the past two weeks, I’ve seen the title bobbing up and down on InstantWatcher’s list of most popular shows and movies. Even odder, the title seems to randomly disappear and reappear from Netflix searches. I was able to find Dolby Vision Cert Tests through Netflix’s search function yesterday with no problem, but today I was only able to access the title through my list of recently watched titles. (You can find the link for the Dolby Test here, by the way.)

The bottom line? Netflix has a lot of content, and some of it is a little weird. Two years ago there was a point in time when it seemed like more Netflix users were watching footage of an oscillating fan than Making a Murderer. Today, it seems like users are really into making sure their TV displays are performing well. Good for everyone for being so responsible.
