It seems as though the most confusing celebrity feuds of this new year has died as quickly as it began. After what seemed like a mysterious absence on Tuesday, Megyn Kelly returned to her Today show without mentioning her new celebrity rival, Jane Fonda. This silence comes during a time when many have criticized — and some have praised — Kelly for her remarks about Fonda earlier this week.
If you missed this particular feud, consider yourself lucky. It all started in September of last year when Fonda appeared as one of the first guests on Megyn Kelly Today. During that interview, Kelly brought up Fonda’s plastic surgery, something the star has been outspoken about in the past but did not want to discuss during the interview. At the time Fonda said it was the “wrong place and the wrong time” to be talking about the work she had gotten done. Cut to four months later, Fonda made a few playful jabs at Kelly’s expense while promoting Grace and Frankie with her Netflix co-star Lily Tomlin. Evidently, Kelly did not take these criticisms well.
On Monday, Kelly returned to her show with a scathing segment defending her questions to Fonda. She then brought up Fonda’s controversial political past and called her “Hanoi Jane.” During her rant about how Fonda disrespected America and its troops during the Vietnam War, Kelly failed to explain 1) why if this was so offensive to her, she would have Fonda on her show, 2) why if this was so offensive to her and she had Fonda on her show, she didn’t bring it up during the interview, and 3) how any of this was relevant to Fonda not wanted to talk about plastic surgery.
The “Hanoi Jane” rant left a sour taste in the mouths of many. Ann Curry called Kelly out for the rant and said “This is not journalism,” and the ladies of The View skewered Kelly over the fight. So yesterday it seemed that when Megyn Kelly Today aired a pre-taped segment instead of a live show, the morning host was either licking her wounds or plotting her next steps against Fonda.
Except no, that’s not what seems to be happening at all. Today’s episode of the show focused on the mothers of Eric Garner and Tamir Rice, a women who lost over 70 pounds, and audience giveaways. During the full hour of the show, Kelly didn’t address anything related to Fonda. It seems as if she just happened to have yesterday off (the Daily Mail spotted Kelly shopping during that time).
So I guess the fight’s over? Look, Megyn Kelly Today is a constantly weird, controversy-filled, and confusing show. The idea that one of the newsworthy conflicts it has ever encountered would be halted by a lack of acknowledgement from its host makes a certain amount of sense. Thus is the way of Megyn Kelly Today.
