MAJOR ‘Big Little Lies’ News: Meryl Streep Will Play Perry’s Mother In Season 2

Stop the presses: Meryl Streep will be joining the Big Little Lies cast in Season 2.

Today, HBO announced that Streep will be playing Mary Louise Wright, Perry’s (Alexander Skarsgard) mother, who arrives in Monterey to deal with the fallout from the finale’s shocking events (*Spoilers ahead!*). Streep will likely have an active role in Season 2, as HBO explains that her character “comes to the secretive suburb in search of answers after her son’s death.”

Oh, boy. Searching for answers? Considering that the finale laid it out pretty clearly, it can’t be long before Mary Louise finds what she’s looking for. If anyone can make Celeste (Nicole Kidman) spill her secrets, we’re betting that it’s her mother-in-law.

But what about Mary Louise’s son, Perry? According to TVLine, Alexander Skarsgard is expected to return to the role in some capacity, although it’s unclear how large of a role he’ll have in the new installment. If abuse and parenting remain the major themes of Season 2 (which they presumably will be), maybe we’ll see some flashbacks of Perry’s relationship with his mother. It may be wishful thinking, but how fascinating would it be to see Mary Louise try to curb her son’s abusive nature?

Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and Reese Witherspoon? Now that’s a power trio.
