ESPN Anchor Jemele Hill Is Leaving ‘SportsCenter’ Just Months After Trump-Related Suspension

Shortly after resolving a lengthy controversy, Jemele Hill will be leaving the 6 pm SportsCenter time slot and moving to another ESPN property, The Undefeated. According to Sports Illustrated media reporter Richard Deitsch, Hill requested to be reassigned to The Undefeated, a website that focuses on the intersection of sports, race, and culture. Hill, a Michigan State graduate, recently penned a well-received column for The Undefeated on the Larry Nassar sentencing.

ESPN rebranded the 6pm time slot of SportsCenter as SC6 in February and anchored the show around its two hosts, Hill and Michael Smith. However, in September, Hill came under fire for calling Trump a “white supremacist,” among other things, in a string of tweets, and it wasn’t long before the president and his staffers began calling for Hill’s termination from ESPN. The network suspended the anchor for two weeks for “violating social media policy” and insisted that her statements “do not represent the position of ESPN.” While Hill was reinstated to SC6 immediately after her two-week suspension, it’s no surprise that the network’s lack of support left a bad taste in her mouth and pushed her toward an ESPN property that better aligned with her views.

Hill lost a key supporter at the Worldwide Leader back in December when John Skipper, formerly the president of ESPN, shocked everyone by stepping down from his position to battle substance abuse issues.
