Could Dennis Reynolds Be ‘Gone Forever’ From ‘Always Sunny’? Glenn Howerton Weighs In…

Ever since the finale of last season’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, fans have been clamoring to know whether Glenn Howerton’s sociopathic bartender character Dennis Reynolds would be returning to the show for Season 13. Viewers believed that Howerton had already confirmed that his character would return to Sunny, despite the actor’s lead role in NBC’s new sitcom A.P. Bio. Howerton, however, took to Twitter yesterday to clarify his stance on the matter, claiming that the character could very well be “gone forever.”

In the finale episode, titled “Dennis’ Double Life,” Dennis finds out that he is the father to a child that he conceived with a woman he met during his layover in North Dakota (in the “Wade Boggs” episode). While he carries on with his typical avoidance behavior throughout the episode, it ends with Dennis saying goodbye to “the gang” and leaving for North Dakota to start over with his new family. If you’ve gotten to know Dennis over the past twelve seasons, this concept is entirely farfetched, therefore it leaves the door open for Dennis to bail on his decision and return to the gang’s dingy Philadelphia dive bar.

In a series of tweets that Howerton posted yesterday morning, the actor proclaimed: “I don’t know why people are putting out articles saying that I confirmed that Dennis is coming back. I never said that. What I said is that it is POSSIBLE that he’ll come back.” He further clarified that the issue is not whether he himself will be returning as an actor, “It’s whether or not ‘Dennis’ is coming back. Dennis could be gone forever.” You can read all of the tweets below.

He also stated that it has nothing to do with his time being devoted to his upcoming show, A.P. Bio. After all, Kaitlin Olson has been working on her new FOX series The Mick and fully plans to proceed with Season 13 of Sunny. “Please don’t think that AP Bio is taking me away from Sunny,” he stated. “It isn’t. That’s like saying that Jumanji is taking The Rock away from Fast and Furious. They are different projects.”

Lastly he noted to fans that the FXX original show’s trio of writers and co-stars – himself along with Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day – have yet to begin the writing process, which is when he will make his decision. This means that we won’t get a true answer for quite some time, as the next season is not expected to debut until sometime in 2019.
