Facebook’s Tom Brady Series ‘Tom vs. Time’ Is A Compelling Watch, Even For Non-Sports Fans

There’s a sports documentary for just about every sport and every athlete out there these days; thanks to ESPN’s 30 for 30, very little is left to the imagination when it comes to the road to success. Facebook Watch is now getting in on the game with Tom vs. Time, a new series that chronicles New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady‘s life both on and off the football field.

The six-part series, which drops new episodes on Thursdays (there are two so far) shows fans (and casual viewers) the ins and outs of Brady’s day-to-day, including life at home with his supermodel wife, Gisele Bündchen, and their children, and his 2017 offseason. The first episode relives some of Brady’s victories – like the Patriots’ awe-inspiring Super Bowl comeback against the Atlanta Falcons – as well as his four-game Deflategate suspension. It’s interesting to see the man behind the mask get so frank about what others might find too humiliating to discuss; he looks straight into the camera and says “It’s a nice way to remember,” as he pulls the letter out of his 2016 binder. “Thank you.”

Having the opportunity to see just how dedicated Brady is to taking care of himself, both in body and in mind, is fascinating. We see him take part in his controversial pliability training with Alex Guerrero, make himself breakfast smoothies, and drills on the beach. There are moments that feel self congratulatory, sure, but at this point, it sort of feels like Brady’s earned it. The man has a lot of Super Bowl rings.

To someone who knows little to nothing about Brady, the Patriots, and the state of football in general, Tom vs. Time still manages to stay compelling. It’s a fascinating look behind the curtain of an image we see pretty much everywhere, and Brady and his wife, while possessing totally otherworldly beauty, are refreshingly normal. They deal with unpredictable insanity from their children, just like everyone else, and they also rage at losses like the Patriots season-opening defeat to the Chiefs last September.

If Facebook Watch was going to make a series about any athlete, it makes perfect sense that it’d be Brady; just about everyone has an opinion about him, whether related to his athletic performance or boyish good looks. So what exactly makes an iconic athlete tick? Who knows. But the chance to see just how cerebral and consuming a sport can be for one of the greatest football players of all time is compelling for anyone, regardless of whether or not you dig the Patriots.
