Tom Cruise is no stranger to crazy movie stunts; the action star has been pushing the envelope for years in all kinds of different franchises and blockbusters, and we’ve paid to go see him do it every time. His wild antics finally caught up with him last year, however, when a stunt that involved him jumping from one building to another in the latest Mission: Impossible installment left him with a broken ankle.

The August 2017 injury wound up halting production for a few months, but the end is finally near for the team, with just 6 weeks left of shooting. Cruise discussed the stunt gone wrong on The Graham Norton Show last week along with costars Rebecca Ferguson, Henry Cavill, and Simon Pegg, and the footage of the incident was worse than you might have imagined (Pegg still won’t watch it!).

Prior to watching the footage, Cruise describes the setup, and the group proceeds to watch the accident happen from three different angles. The third – which involves a closeup on Cruise’s ankle as it slams into the side of the building into an unrecognizable position – is not for the faint of heart.

“If you are squeamish, don’t watch this,” Norton and Ferguson warn. Cruise, for his part, can’t help but smile at the whole situation, despite the fact that his ankle is still not fully healed – and to his credit, as the footage shows, GOT UP and finished the rest of the take, despite his foot having just been mangled against the side of a building. “Here is why Tom Cruise gets paid the big bucks,” Norton marvels. “Up he gets, and he’s running!”

The Mission: Impossible movies may not be typical Oscar fare, but come on, people. Tom Cruise destroyed his ankle to deliver a genuine building-to-building leap for our viewing pleasure. The least we can do is give him a trophy for it.
