Forget the New England Patriots or the Philadelphia Eagles. Netflix might have just won the Super Bowl. The streaming service dropped a surprise trailer for a Cloverfield prequel called The Cloverfield Paradox during the middle of the 2nd quarter. The sci-fi thriller features Black Mirror alum Gugu Mbatha-Raw and promises to reveal the secret behind the first film. Oh, and Netflix is releasing the film — without any other hype or press — immediately after the Super Bowl.

Even though Netflix managed to keep AN ENTIRE MOVIE PRODUCED BY J.J. ABRAMS under their hat, director Ava DuVernay seems to have been the one person clued into The Cloverfield Paradox‘s big launch. DuVernay tweeted earlier today:

Then, immediately following the trailer’s debut, she explained precisely what Netflix meant when they said the film was coming very soon:

The Cloverfield Paradox will reportedly explain what exactly caused the insane monster attack that shook New York City in the original Cloverfield film. It’s directed by Julius Onah and, according to poster art that was briefly available on Netflix’s media site, features an international all-star cast including Daniel Bruhl, Elizabeth Debicki, Aksel Hennie, Chris O’Dowd, David Oyelowo, John Ortiz, Zhang Ziyi, and the aforementioned Mbatha-Raw.

So, good news for Crock-Pot fans. You don’t have to watch This Is Us after the game after all.
