The Walking Dead kingpin Robert Kirkman told Entertainment Weekly about the changes in store for the spinoff series Fear the Walking Dead that returns for its fourth season on April 15th. The series, which began as a completely separate entity to The Walking Dead, following the zombie plague from its first days in California and down to Mexico (as opposed to The Walking Dead, which has traversed from Georgia to Virginia). But with the advent of season 4, it looks like the parent show and its offspring may be drifting closer together.

The biggest thing is that the character of Morgan (Lennie James) will be migrating from The Walking Dead over to Fear. What that means for the timeline is unclear, though it most likely means that  Fear will end up having to time-jump into the future. While Morgan’s whereabouts haven’t always been accounted for on TWD, it’s highly unlikely he would have trekked all the way out west and back in the times between when we knew his whereabouts.

Per EW:

Once they decided to link the series through an actual character, the next step involved finding the best one to crossover. “When Scott suggested moving Morgan over,” says Kirkman of Scott M. Gimple, who now oversees both programs, “it seemed like a really great idea and a really cool way to bring things in. I know the audience doesn’t really know exactly how that makes sense yet, or what’s actually coming of it. As the year progresses and you see exactly what it is, you’ll see that it’s going to be a really great story for Morgan that will give us a lot of cool insight into his character.”

In addition to the Morgan character crossing over, new characters played by the likes of Maggie Grace, Jenna Elfman, and Garet Dillahunt will also appear. This much larger cast would be a change from the traditional charm of Fear, which is that the cast was smaller and more familial, giving the life-or-death stakes a bit more gravity.

Also expect the accelerated pace of season 3 to continue:

But what will all those changes both in front of and behind the camera mean for the show itself? “Walking Dead is at its best when it’s constantly evolving,” says Kirkman. “Having season 3 be a very fast-paced season that introduces a lot of new elements, it kind of shakes things up quite a bit and is a great appetizer to what we have planned for season 4, which is really going to ramp that up quite a bit.”

All in all, expect the fourth season of Fear the Walking Dead to be a decently significant departure from its earliest incarnations. For better or for worse.
