If you’ve already completed your binge-watch of Netflix’s Altered Carbon, you’ll happily join us in celebrating this week’s Woman Crush Wednesday, Martha Higareda.
WHO’S THAT GAL: Martha Higareda
WHY WE’RE CRUSHING: As Detective Kristin Ortega in Altered Carbon, the Mexican actress (she’s also a writer and producer!) fully goes for it on-screen, both physically and emotionally (and sometimes both at once!). As the female counterpart to Joel Kinnaman’s Takeshi Kovacs, Martha keeps her character fierce and focused throughout the 10-episode season of the sci-fi series. Oh, and perhaps you’ve heard about the naked sword fight, one of the buzziest and most badass moments the show has to offer? Martha serves as the clothed part of that intense fight scene, battling a whole slew of of Dichen Lachman’s Reileen clones. It’s not just a lot of fun, but very exciting to see two women fighting in such a graceful yet aggressive way — especially considering one is naked and one is suffering a stomach stabbing. Not that they let those vulnerabilities get in the way in their quest for defeat though.
WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER BEFORE: Martha has starred in numerous Mexican productions, landing her first American role is 2007’s Borderland. She followed that up with a role in David Ayer’s Street Kings and then Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassins’ Ball. Martha starred opposite Norman Reedus in the 2012 drama Hello Herman and 2015’s McFarland, USA with Kevin Costner. She’s also appeared in Royal Pains and can be heard in an episode of Steven Universe.
