**SPOILERS FOR ALTERED CARBON SEASON ONE AHEAD**
Netflix’s Altered Carbon ends on an emotional cliffhanger. After figuring out who tried to kill Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy) and why, Takeshi Kovacs (Joel Kinnaman) is “free” to embark on a journey to track down the consciousness of his long-lost love Quell Falconer (Renée Elise Goldsberry). Yup, she’s alive, somewhere in the vast expanse of space.
Altered Carbon is based on Richard K. Morgan’s 2002 novel of the same name. Fans of the book already know that Morgan produced two sequels: 2003’s Broken Angels and 2005’s Woken Furies. Broken Angels imagines a differently-sleeved Kovacs working with a mercenary group called Carrera’s Wedge. A pilot named Jan Schneider wants to hire Kovacs as protection on a daring journey to nab a Martian artifact. There’s also stuff involving a portal and an archeologist they need to break out of a prison camp. Basically, there’s a whole slew of new characters embroiled in a ton of daring action sequences. So are we going to see Joel Kinnaman return for more fun in Altered Carbon Season 2? Will there be a Season 2? Here’s everything we know so far…
Will There Be An Altered Carbon Season 2?
It’s honestly too soon to say. Netflix has a knack of announcing new season orders about a month or so after the first season drops.
That said, we were in the room last week when Joel Kinnaman, Martha Higareda, and James Purefoy were asked if they’d be back for a second season. The good news is the cast seemed to think that a second season was a major possibility. However, there is some bad news…
Would The Original Cast Come Back?
Even though a type of immortality is a reality in Altered Carbon, chances are most of the original cast will not be returning for a second season.
Kinnaman said, “Our characters are going to be re-sleeved in the next season.” The actor went on to say with a smile, “And there were two other Kovacs in the season. And if I was the showrunner, I would put them in a new sleeve because that’s pretty cool.”
That said, Kinnaman and Higareda could come back as Riker and Ortega. They don’t appear in Broken Angels, but producers could take liberties with the text and work them into the plot. When asked about that possibility, Higareda said, “We don’t know, we don’t know,”
“We actually have no idea what’s going on,” said Kinnaman with a laugh.
After praising Kinnaman’s work as Riker, Higareda admitted, “Personally I would like to see a lot more of that.”
“I mean, Riker, that’s a cool character,” said Kinnaman. “He’s a very flawed human being.”
When Could Season 2 of Altered Carbon Premiere?
Netflix ordered the first season of Altered Carbon all the way back in January 2016. That means one season of the sci-fi show took two years to make it to the screen. Based on that timeline, 2020 is the earliest we could get Altered Carbon Season 2.
