If you’re in need of a swift jolt of inspiration and optimism, Netflix’s stirring new docuseries Coach Snoop should move to the top of your queue. Premiering last Friday, the eight-episode series follows renowned Hip-Hop artist Snoop Dogg as he strives to keep at-risk kids off the streets through the Snoop Youth Football League (SYFL), a non-profit after-school program the music mogul founded back in 2005.

The transition from rapper to youth football coach might seem unlikely, but the music icon made it crystal clear that Coach Snoop and Snoop Dogg are two different people.

“Coach Snoop and Snoop Dogg will never cross worlds,” the singer-songwriter says in the premiere episode. “It’s like, you know, Bruce Wayne and Batman, it’s like Clark Kent and Superman. You never see those two people in the same place at the same time. Coach Snoop does not have marijuana, alcohol, anything like that around the kids, period. Now Snoop Dogg, he’s different. Snoop Dogg sometimes don’t give a fuck, and that’s just that.”

The series features a host of intriguing characters, but the standouts are soft-spoken offensive guard Maximus Gibbs and passionate, sometimes volatile assistant coach K-Mac Garmon. Snoop and K-Mac often act as a mentor and father figure to the nearly-300 pound teen, whose father left when he a kid. While the coaching staff is far from perfect, the impact the youth football league has on the teens is undeniable.

Snoop’s desire to use his celebrity status to affect positive change is admirable, and he seems thankful to have the opportunity to make a real difference as the most high-profile youth football coach in the world.

“Music gave me the power to create a football league, but football is taking me to places that music could’ve never took me to,” Snoop said near the end of the pilot episode. “To be a mentor, a leader, a role model.”

When you think of Snoop Dogg, the first term that comes to mind probably isn’t “leader,” but Coach Snoop will give you an appreciation for the singer-songwriter’s commendable charitable endeavors. The D-O-double G has gone from gin and juice to coach and mentor and you can follow along with his surprising story on Netflix.
