‘Frasier’ Star John Mahoney’s Cause Of Death Has Been Revealed

This week, television lost a legend. On Monday, February 5, it was reported that John Mahoney, best known for his role as blue-collar father Martin Crane in NBC’s Frasier, had passed away. Now TMZ has revealed the cause of Mahoney’s death. The 77-year-old actor died of brain disease and lung cancer.

Though Mahoney was best known for his work in Frasier, he had a recurring role on Hot in Cleveland as recently as 2014. He was also known for his roles in movies such as The American President, Say Anything…, and Eight Men Out. Here is what TMZ had to say about the cause of Mahoney’s death:

“Our sources say the Frasier star’s official causes of death include brain disease, lung cancer and seizures. We’re told Mahoney also suffered from kidney disease and diabetes.”

Mahoney and the character of Martin Crane played an influential role in the lives of many audience members. On Tuesday, Decider’s own Brett White wrote at length about how the actor influenced him in his piece “Frasier’s John Mahoney Gave Sensitive Sons the TV Dad They Needed.” Many in Hollywood, from Cameron Crowe and John Cusack to Viola Davis and Mike Colter, took to Twitter to pay tribute to the deceased actor. There is no doubt that Mahoney was an important part of television history. He will be missed.
