When Is ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 2 Coming Out?

Season One of Star Trek: Discovery showed us the Klingon War, the Terran Empire, spore drives, torture, and a cuddly cadet dropping the f-bomb. It was quite the ride, and based on last night’s jaw-dropping season finale, Season Two is set to be even crazier. But how long are we going to have to wait for it? (Spoiler alert: A long time.)

The good news for Trek fans is that Star Trek: Discovery is indeed returning for a second season. CBS has already renewed the show and the producers are already teasing out next year’s storylines. So, if you haven’t seen last night’s big bad cliffhanger, you may want to turn away now.

Are you all up to speed? Great. Here’s everything we already know about Star Trek: Discovery Season 2.

When Is Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 Coming Out?

As far back as September 2017, Star Trek: Discovery EP Alex Kurtzman was warning reporters that the earliest we would see Season 2 would be “ideally, on the early side of 2019.” The first season of Star Trek: Discovery was infamously pushed back numerous times — a season of Star Trek takes time! — so expect a similarly prolonged wait for Season 2. That said, Kurtzman might have been optimistic.

Last night, Star Trek: Discovery star Jason Isaacs tweeted that fans would have to wait until 2020 for new episodes! (But I don’t know if we should trust him after that whole Terran Empire reveal…)

What’s Season 2 Going To Be About?

Well, as Mr. Isaacs’s tweet so lovingly spoils…Star Trek: Discovery‘s first season ended on a tantalizing cliffhanger. While escorting Sarek back to Vulcan to pick up Discovery‘s new captain, the ship receives a distress signal from none other than Captain Christopher Pike of the USS Enterprise. Here’s a full breakdown of what this means, but the suggestion is we’ll encounter the Enterprise before it’s under the legendary leadership of one James Tiberius Kirk. In fact, the very first recorded episode of Star Trek was actually about Kirk’s predecessor in the Captain’s Chair: Christopher Pike. Serving under Pike at this time? Possibly a certain guy named Spock. Kurtzman has already been teasing that we’ll be surprised by who is on the Enterprise (with a note that we may not be spending too much time with the ship’s bridge crew).

Besides that, it seems that we’ll see more of Michelle Yeoh‘s renegade “Captain” Georgiou and we’ll toggle back to see what new Klingon leader L’Rell (and her right hand man Ash Tyler) are up to. Oh, and did you notice that spore land on Tilly’s shoulder? We’ll probably learn more about that spore. Spores!

So What Am I Supposed To Do Until Star Trek: Discovery Comes Back?

Re-watch the first season? Learn how to kick a guy standing behind you, Georgiou-style?
