Ah, February. Love is in the air, chocolates are selling off the shelves, and bubbly is soon to be popped. Before all these romantic gestures come to a climax on Valentine’s Day, however, it’s important that we stop to celebrate one of the most important holidays of all: Galentine’s Day. That’s right. A day dedicated solely to your gals and making sure they know how much they mean to you, a day started by one Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) in a fateful Parks and Recreation episode.
So what exactly is Galentine’s Day? “Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.”
Leslie may choose to celebrate Galentine’s Day with her two greatest loves – BFFs and breakfast food – but you can celebrate pretty much anyway you want, as long as you’re observing lady love. Ovaries before brovaries, uteruses before duderuses, etc., is the name of the game here. 'Parks and Recreation': "Galentine's Day"
It wouldn’t be Galentine’s Day without the one episode that started it all, the Season Two installment of Parks and Recreation that introduces us to Leslie’s favorite holiday and sees her round up Ann, April, Donna, her mom, and a trio of women from her past at a restaurant to indulge in brunch and receive hand-made gifts from her. Whip up some waffles and enjoy the best day of the year the way it was always intended to be celebrated.
'Legally Blonde'
What better way to show your ladies you love them than with a Reese Witherspoon comedy that embraces empowerment and sees a woman kick ass against all odds? Elle Woods is an icon for many reasons, but we all know she never would have gotten to where she is if it hadn’t been for her fabulous friends (looking at you, Paulette!)
'The First Wives Club'
This classic comedy sees three best friends reunite for the first time in 30 years after the death of one of their own, and they all get revenge on their ex-husbands through a variety of schemes. If The First Wives Club doesn’t have you and your crew up on your feet and belting out “You Don’t Own Me” by the end (preferably with wine in hand), we don’t know what to tell you.
'Bridesmaids'
Whether you’re a bride-to-be or always the bridesmaid, you and your BFFs are bound to be delighted by the uproarious Bridesmaids. Sit back, crack up, cringe, and cry, as perpetually single Annie (Kristen Wiig) attempts to pull off the perfect wedding for her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) and hits more than a few snags in the process. You’re not making it out of this one without a few belly laughs. We promise.
'Sex and the City'
What better way to celebrate Galentine’s Day than with a binge to end all binges? Forget the real-life drama currently swirling around the stars of this classic HBO comedy and instead settle in for the evening with your own Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte. This barrier-breaking series is a must-see for pretty much everyone, but we can’t imagine a day more suited to breezing through a few of the best episodes than one with your greatest gals by your side.
