It’s been 20 years and 2 months since the world was swept away by Titanic (which Wikipedia calls an “epic romance-disaster film” which is the most epic sounding kind of film). Still, there is one question that lingers in the minds of romantics and nitpickers alike: why in the world didn’t Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) just climb on top of that floating door with Rose (Kate Winslet) instead of succumbing to the icy water?!

Seriously, this is such a debated topic that the Mythbusters had to be brought in to put this door debate to rest. They busted it good, proving that Rose and Jack could have both fit on the door and survived–and they did it right in front of director James Cameron’s face and everything!

Billy Zane ain’t no Mythbuster, but he has his own hot take on Titanic’s much debated end. In an interview with People, Zane–who played Rose’s dashing but dastardly fiance Cal–said that the decision to off Jack was “just good storytelling,” even if that door he clung to was fit for two.

“Your hero had to die,” Zane said, laughing in a manner that I can only imagine was very Cal-like. “I don’t know what else would have done it. It had to happen.”

It had to happen, people! The story has to be served, and Jack had to die in order to give the disaster-romance its epic feel!
