Blessed be the fruit: After winning big at last year’s Emmys, The Handmaid’s Tale is adding another Emmy winner to its cast for Season 2.
The West Wing veteran Bradley Whitford is joining the cast of Hulu’s acclaimed dystopian drama in a recurring role, our sister site Deadline is reporting. He’ll play Commander Joseph Lawrence: a gruff, intimidating man with a sly sense of humor who’s the chief architect of Gilead’s economy. No word yet on who his handmaid will be… but we did see Elisabeth Moss’ Offred getting hauled away at the end of last season.
Whitford is best known to TV fans as The West Wing‘s deputy chief of staff Josh Lyman, a role that earned Whitford three Emmy nominations, with a win in 2001. (He also won an Emmy in 2015 for his guest role on Amazon’s Transparent.) Whitford’s recent credits include Brooklyn Nine-Nine (as Jake’s father Roger), Happy-ish, Trophy Wife and the Oscar-nominated thriller Get Out.
He’s just the latest high-profile name to make plans to visit Gilead: Season 2 (which debuts April 25) will also welcome Oscar winner Marisa Tomei, who’ll guest-star in an episode set in the never-before-seen colonies, and 24 alum Cherry Jones, who’s set to play Offred’s mother Holly.
