‘First Team: Juventus’ On Netflix Is A GOOOAL For Soccer Lovers, But A Pass For Non-Fans

Fans of renowned soccer legacy Juventus FC will want to carve out some time this weekend for the new docu-series First Team: Juventus. Premiering today on Netflix, the six-episode series follows the professional and personal lives of current and former footballers like Alessandro Del Piero, Federico Bernardeschi, Blaise Matuidi, Giorgio Chiellini, and Gianluigi Buffon during the 2017-2018 season.

If you’ve never heard of any of those players, this Netflix Original is not for you.

Soccer fans are unquestionably familiar with the club’s dominant history. The team has won a record six Serie A titles in a row but have infamously come up short in the Champions League finals, kinda similar to the Atlanta Braves teams of the ’90s. In nine Finals appearances, the squad has only captured the ultimate prize twice (1985, 1996), so expectations for the season have understandably reached a fever pitch.

Juventus doesn’t play for second place. They play to win.

The series does a nice job of showing just how special this team is to its legions of fans while also providing viewers with an inside look at their lives off the field. The audio for First Team: Juventus is in Italian, but if subtitles aren’t your bag, the series also allows you to watch episodes in English. Just hit pause and click on the audio/subtitles box on the bottom right of your screen. Or you can keep the subtitles and be treated to some A+ soccer commentary:

That sounds like something I’d say if I were forced to cover an international soccer match at the very last minute.

First Team: Juventus is a no-brainer for soccer fans, but if don’t know your red card from yellow card or header from bicycle kick, you might want to make like a well-rounded footballer and pass.

The first three episodes of First Team: Juventus are now available to stream on Netflix.
